AS AWFUL as the 1915-1917 Armenian killings were, it is completely irresponsible for the US House of Representatives Foreign Relations Committee to recognise them as "a genocide".
In the past Turkey has proven itself to be a key NATO ally - not to mention the pivotal role it plays in the 'global war on terror'. With a new government and growing anti-American sentiment in Ankara, the Foreign Relations Committee couldn't have picked a worse time to pass this resolution.
Armenia on the other hand, plays no key role in US foreign policy. However, it does possess a well oiled lobby, bankrolled by several wealth Armenian-Americans.
A victory for special interests. A defeat for the national interest.
Perhaps Nancy Pelosi should have taken a look at events on the border between Turkey and Kurdistan before supporting the resolution?
Fortunately for President Bush, this may present him with an ideal opportunity to redeem himself with the Turkish people by vociferously opposing the resolution.

I agree entirely. I also wonder what other crimes could be called genocides and whether the Committee really wants to set itself up as arbiter of official history.
