Earth to the Prime Minister

HE CLAIMS to understand your pain. However, he appears to have no idea how he got into the job.
"I understand people’s worries. People put me in not because I am some sort of celebrity but to do the job. To make sure that I understand the worries and hopes and anxieties."
I could rant and rave about how if he understands "worries" he should stop taxing us all to death, but I'm intrigued as to what job the Prime Minister is referring to? Is it his post as Prime Minister? Correct me if I'm wrong, the electorate has never had the chance to decide whether they want to "put you in".

Perhaps he's referring to the cake walk that he enjoyed to win the post as Labour party leader?
